Mason-Kay Jade to Add 'Fei Cui' to Jade Reports

Mason-Kay Jade to Add 'Fei Cui' to Jade Reports

As the leading authority on natural jadeite jade in the American jewelry industry, we are proud to offer our jade testing services to both the trade and the public.

Mason-Kay Jade is proud to announce that starting on June 1st, 2025, it will begin including the following statement on all Mason-Kay Jadeite Authenticity Reports: “Internationally known as ‘Fei Cui,’ an umbrella term for pyroxene jades comprised primarily of jadeite, omphacite, kosmochlor, or any combination thereof.” This decision aligns with similar moves by Hong Kong Jade and Stone Laboratories, Lotus Gemology, CIBJO World Jewellery Confederation, and GIA.

More than a decade ago, the gemological community began to recognize that the complex intermixing of jadeite, omphacite, and kosmochlor within the polycrystalline aggregate commonly referred to as “jadeite jade” complicated efforts to draw clear distinctions among pyroxene jades. In April 2012, GIA addressed this issue in a report titled “The Jadeite-Omphacite Nomenclature Question,” in which the author famously asked, “What do we call these stones?”

Since then, the Fei Cui Working Group—operating under the CIBJO umbrella—has actively encouraged the adoption of the Chinese term Fei Cui, which is already the most widely used name for pyroxene jade in the international trade.

To support accurate communication and prevent the devaluation or misrepresentation of omphacite jade, Mason-Kay Jade will adopt Fei Cui as a collective term encompassing jadeite jade, jadeite-omphacite jade, omphacite jade, and kosmochlor jade. By including this terminology in our Jadeite Authenticity Reports, we stand with the global gemological community in advocating for clarity, consistency, and respect for the mineralogical diversity within the jadeite family.

As always, thank you for your continued support.
