Jade Jewelry Care

As Kris the Jade Lady often says: "Jade loves LOVE!"
This means it is good for your jade to be handled, as the oils on your skin help coat the jade and protect it from staining.

Natural jadeite jade is perfectly suitable for everyday wear, as is genuine nephrite jade. Learn more about the two jades here.

However, they are both still gemstones and should be handled with care.

Jade Care FAQs

Can I wear my jade everyday?

Yes! Jade loves LOVE! Wear your jade and don't be afraid to touch it, as your skin oils help coat the jade and protect it from outside chemicals that could possibly stain it.

Can I sleep in my jade?

Not only can you sleep in your jade bangle, but many customers safely wear their bangle for years without removing it. However, any jade jewelry that is prong-set (i.e. pendants or rings) is not recommended for sleeping, as the bedsheets can wear down the prongs that hold your stone in.

So basically - you can sleep in jade without any problems, but you might need to concern yourself with the metal or other stones in your jewelry piece.

As for jade bead necklaces and bracelets, you may have to have these pieces restrung more often if you sleep in your jade jewelry. Typical restringing has to be done approximately every 1 - 3 years.

Can I shower in my jade?

Technically yes, especially if you're wearing a jade bangle. However, if your jade stone is glued in (as in the case with cabochons set into rings and pendants), any moisture may soften the glue over time so we recommend limiting exposure to water.

Do not remove jade in or near the shower as the stone could possibly break if it falls on the tile floor.

Additionally, you want to be concerned about other metals and stones that may be in your jade jewelry. For instance, you don't want to expose soaps or oils to your diamonds as they will stick to the surface and temporarily dull their luster.

Can I swim in my jade?

There are a few risks associated with swimming in jade jewelry. One, if your jade stone is glued in - any moisture can soften the glue. Two, jewelry can easily slide off of the wearer in the water. And three, if your jade is mounted in gold it should not be exposed to chlorine at all. Chlorine "eats" gold and will destroy it over time if exposed repeatedly.

Can I garden in my jade?

We don't recommend gardening in any jewelry. In the case of jade, quartz dust in the soil may act as an abrasive - creating tiny scratches on the surface of the jade that can dull it's appearance. If this happens, you can ask your local jeweler about sending your jade stone to a lapidary for repolishing. This is considered normal maintenance.

How do I clean my jade jewelry?

Please do not steam your jade or place it in the ultrasonic, as these methods may remove the colorless beeswax coating that protects your jade stone.

The proper way to clean jade is to simply apply a mild, soapy water solution. A soft bristled toothbrush is best for cleaning the crevices within carvings and settings. Of course, still try to minimize the exposure of your jade jewelry to water.
