Meet the Masons

Husband and wife duo, Jeff and Kristina Mason, run the Mason-Kay home office in Colorado with their fur babies Lola and Ollie.

Jeff is a fourth generation jewelry professional, a GIA Graduate Gemologist and has been in the jade business since the 1980's. Mason-Kay was started in 1976 by Jeff's uncle and father, and he is proud to carry on the family tradition.

Kristina, aka #KrisTheJadeLady, has been in the jade business since the early 1990's and has been designing jade jewelry for Mason-Kay since 2007.

Mason-Kay as a Wholesaler and Retailer, and Our Jade Testing Services for the Trade and Public

Mason-Kay is one of the best-known names in jade in the United States, and because of our longstanding presence in the industry, there are occasionally misconceptions online about which businesses have a direct relationship with Mason-Kay.

Mason-Kay supplies jade to thousands of jewelry retailers across the United States. We source our inventory from established jade cutting centers and we purchase estate jade (meaning pre-owned or secondhand jade) from customers in the United States. However, a seller’s claim that they “sell to Mason-Kay” does not necessarily mean that the seller is a Mason-Kay jade supplier. Mason-Kay does not rely on individual online retailers as a source of jade.

It is also important to note that not all jade tested by Mason-Kay is sold by Mason-Kay. Some sellers offer jade accompanied by a gem report issued through Mason-Kay’s jade testing service. Others resell pre-owned jewelry that was originally produced or sold by Mason-Kay. Neither circumstance necessarily means that the seller is an authorized Mason-Kay retail partner.

A Mason-Kay gem report verifies information about the specific piece submitted for examination; it does not, by itself, establish that the seller is a Mason-Kay retail partner. Likewise, a piece originally produced by Mason-Kay may subsequently be resold by an independent seller in the secondary market.

For this reason, the presence of the Mason-Kay name on a gem report, the fact that a piece was originally made by Mason-Kay, or a seller’s statement that they have done business with Mason-Kay should not be interpreted as proof of a current wholesale relationship.

Mason-Kay Jade Reports

Are Mason-Kay jade testing reports considered appraisals? No. Our reports for jade testing and valuation are used by appraisers because most jewelry stores and appraisal labs do not have the equipment needed to properly detect treatment in jadeite jade. 

Jewelry sellers, appraisers, and customers alike use our jade testing and valuation services to guarantee the authenticity of their jade and assign proper value for purchase, replacement, or resale.

If you are thinking of buying a piece of jade secondhand or from an estate dealer that comes with a Mason-Kay jade report, you are encouraged to call our office to verify the authenticity based on the report number.

We also recommend cross-checking the report number if you're buying jade with any gem report, whether it's from GIA or another reputable laboratory, to verify that the gem report is not fraudulent. Please note that fraudulent gem reports for jade are rare, and this is not a major concern for the gem industry, but we will be happy to answer any questions you have nonetheless.
