Collection: Jade Saddle Rings

At Mason-Kay Jade, we often receive requests for jade saddle rings—a distinctive unisex design recognized by its elongated shape and east–west orientation. Although the concept of a saddle ring could, in theory, be adapted to other gemstones, it remains a hallmark style within jade jewelry.

One of the most desired pieces for a jade jewelry collection is the solid jade saddle ring, carved entirely from a single piece of natural jadeite jade. Its smooth, saddle-like top and seamless band showcase the beauty of traditional jade craftsmanship. For those who love the look but prefer a more versatile option, saddle-shaped jade stones are more often set in gold or platinum, blending timeless design with modern wearability. (Note: While metal saddle rings can be sized, we don't recommend drastic sizing, for instance more than 2 sizes up or down.)

Jade saddle rings started appearing in the early 20th century, giving them vintage appeal without being tied to a bygone trend. Their origins are somewhat mysterious with some suggest the design may have evolved from ancient Chinese archer’s rings, protective jade thumb rings worn by archers to guard against bowstring recoil.

For a contemporary alternative, consider an east–west oval jade ring. Featuring a horizontally set cabochon, this refined style evokes the same graceful profile as a saddle ring while allowing for more flexibility in stone selection and sizing, perfect for adding a modern touch to your jade jewelry collection.
